[ARCHIVED] Renaming of Bravo Street to Carrie Johnson Way

Ms Carrie Johnson

Bravo Street will be renamed Carrie Johnson Way

Socially distanced ceremony will be held on Saturday, February 20 at noon

On Saturday, February 20, at 12:00pm, at the corner of Bravo Street and Weeden Street in Lincolnville, the City of St. Augustine will unveil a new street name for Bravo Street in honor of Miss Carrie Johnson, a St. Augustine native, known affectionately as “the Voice of Lincolnville.”  The City of St. Augustine City Commission passed Ordinance 2020-17 to provide for renaming Bravo Street between Riberia Street and Sanford Street as Carrie Johnson Way.  The community is invited to join the socially distanced unveiling ceremony.

St. Augustine Mayor Tracy Upchurch will provide opening remarks, followed by Vice Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline, and keynote speaker David Nolan, St. Augustine Community Historian.  Family and friends of Miss Carrie will be invited to offer remarks or share stories as part of the ceremony.

Among her many volunteer activities during her life, Miss Carrie, as she was referred to all who knew her, organized an annual Christmas Caroling Galore, which started in 1995.  Johnson established The Miss Carrie Foundation for Homeless Students, assisted with establishing the Lincolnville 150th anniversary celebration, and helped found the Anniversary to Commemorate the Civil Rights Demonstrations (ACCORD) organization, and served as vice president of the Fort Mose Historical Society.

The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center, located at 102 ML king Ave., is open from 10:30am to 4:30pm, Tuesday through Saturday, and offers a Miss Carrie Johnson exhibit for anyone who would like to see more about Miss Carrie’s life in Lincolnville.
